The museum building was originally a convent. It now includes a reconstructed anatomical theatre and a unique collection of inventions.
Shown are the apparatus that Kamerlingh Onnes used to liquefie Helium and the electromagnet equipment for the low temperature research by Wander Johannes de Haas. There are many fascinating examples of experimental engineering in the collection.

The museum is named after Herman Boerhaave, a Dutch physician and botanist. He was was famous for his teaching at Leiden. Boerhaave lived to a great age receiving brilliant students from all over Europe, including Peter the Great, Voltaire and Linnaeus.
