Naturalis also has workshop areas for additional activities, food and drinks and a museum store. All of this is housed in a striking building with all sorts of references to nature.

CLUSIUS BOTANICAL GARDEN

 

		The Hortus Botanicus Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in The Netherlands. The earliest section of the Hortus dates back to 1590. It is the current Front Garden.

		The Clusius Garden gives an impression of what the Hortus was like around 1600. It was the time when the bonds between the Netherlands and Asia were formed. The exchange of plants and knowledge between these cultures can be seen in the Japanese Garden. The Victoria Amazonica is the pride of The Hortus. It can be admired in the Victoria Glasshouse.

SCIENCE   LEIDEN OBSERVATORY   ASTRONOMICAL INSTITUTE         The Observatory is the astronomical institute of the Faculty of Science of Leiden University. It was established in 1633 to house the quadrant of Rudolph Snellius. It is the oldest operating university observatory in the world. 		Visit this magnificent house at the Rapenburg canal. Siebold lived in this house and as early as in 1837. It was in this location that Siebold showed his marvelous collection of Japanese objects and artefacts to an interested public.

Today, after more than 150 years, his former house is the first official Japan centre in the Netherlands.

		The Pieterskerk is a late-Gothic church in Leiden dedicated to Saint Peter. It is known today as the church of the Pilgrim Fathers where the pastor John Robinson was buried. It is also the burial place of the scientist Willebrord Snellius.

The municipality museum of Leiden is housed in Leiden’s old Cloth Hall from 1640. It is the museum of arts, crafts and history of Leiden. The museum covers the history of Leiden from Leiden’s relief in 1574. Important in the museum are works by old masters such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen and Lucas van Leyden. In addition, the museum exhibits works by modern artists such as Theo van Doesburg, Harm Kamerling Onnes and Jan Wolkers.
